Full Version: Sub facing and port question

Hey guys,

Was just brainstorming about some possible boot install ideas for a future install (if I acquire the car I am chasing!)

First off, I noticed at the local SPL competition yesterday that the majority of the entrants had there subs firing backwards (as you do laugh.gif ) and the port often firing backwards as well.

Now my question is this; in a mid sized car (a sedan like a civic, or a larger car like a commodore) with the seats down, would you gain more DB by designing a box that has the sub firing straight into the cabin (so firing directly into the rear seat, but in a comp the seat would be pulled down) and the port firing into the front as well?

OR

Having the sub firing into the back of the boot and a port at the front of the box that is firing into the cabin?

Cheers guys,

Jason

Test it and let us know tongue.gif

Every Car and set up is different.

not the response i was after Michael ! haha

Yeah i get where your coming from, as each car will differ in resonant frequency, cabin pressure and so on. But i figured someone on the forum would have or has faced the same delama i am currently 'thinking' about hehe

Jason, ask Dave how well his 3512 went in his firing foward install! smile.gif

usually, the port will be very close to in-phase with the speaker, so putting the port anywhere except in the same location (in theory) would be bad.

only way to prove or disprove for YOUR car is to try.

You gain dB's by 'loading' the woofers off a panel..

To get loud in a commodore, Generally the best solution is firing upwards and using the tyre well..

In smaller sedans, firing off the back off the boot or sides is generally louder than having the subs facing into the cabin.

Here are afew topics that cover loading..

In a CRX we fire subs forward and ports back and it works well.

Hope this info helps maybe.
Tarja's Bro
we found that in smaller cars that subs facing up and port to the side works best as with subs and port facing the hatch we couldnt even hit a 140 then we went with the above idea and hit a 144.1.

but that was in a corolla and same sort of results out of tarja's car if u wanna play with a larger car speak to devinchy he has had alot of experience with sedans as he started in one which im sure the regulars remember quite well

In my past experience i have seen that rear loading works particularly well in hatches, while firing the subs up at the boot works best in sedans. you can also mini wall, basically sealing of the boot while maximising box space and firing into the cabin. all the best results come from lots of testing. if you want to get loud quick i would just make them fire at the bootlid.

But of course it will depend on the car. If you get a hatch then you will need to test boxes and most probably rear load.
