In the final stages of building my sub box but im unsure of where to put the port... i was thinking of putting it on the left side of the box in the pic (which is actually the rear of the box) and facing it upwards so it faces into the roof of the boot... would this work well or where else should i consider having the port?

near my left foot there so it would be running up the rear wall. only thing is im not sure of the dimensions yet thats all, have to find out volume 2morro hopefully smile.gif.

And also (just for want factor) how do neons or LED tubes go in sub boxes? probly more leaning to LEDs as less heat and i assume could take more of a beating.

Oh and i hate the rain, it makes building stuff for your car and working on your car such a bitch. as you can see we've had a bit of rain the last couple days:

thats a pagola (or whatever theyre called) next to a river i thinks. ignore the dark gentleman there, he is just one of our many fine indigenous folk.

man, australia is so fcuked up

flooding upo there

fcuking bushfires in Vic and WA

when will it ever end
brad89
about the port trism? lol, any help maybe?
trism
well to be honest, that picture shows me nothing...

where is the sub going??
mad89
bottom of the pic matt...

generally most people put the ports on the same side as the woofer... is it possible to fit it there?
brad89
in the hole that is between my feet, that is a view from the top, i havent put the roof on it yet.

rick- yeh there might be but depending on how long the port has to be there might not be enough room, it will be a slot port too if i didnt mention that earlier or yous didnt guess it
trism
lol, didnt picl that was the hole coz it was sqaure.....thought it mighta been a window..

then i realised you would be using a kicker sub

LOL

putting a slot port into that is gunna be a whore.

most ppl incorporate the slot into the actual building of teh box, using the sides/top/bottom of the box as eh sides of the port.....
brad89
the side which is on the left of picture is what i was thinking. most people have the luxury of knowing how big the volume of their enclosure is gonna be, i just built it so it fits in the car, can get the spare out, and tried for as much volume as i could.

wont be that much of a whore, just need cut two rectangular pieces of wood and and whack them in, and a rectangle in the roof. but there is no disadvantage to having the port go up into the bonnet? i read somewhere that it is ideal to have the sub firing upwards...
db nathan
as it will be practically imposible to slot port it I would use an aeroport on the same face as the sub. I would us the widest you can and perhaps one on each side. It does also depend on the box size, but you need to maximise port usage.
trism
mm, with your enclosure, itd be better off to just go for a round port. much easier.

coz i mean, what happens when you figure out that the slot port needs to be some crazy length/height, and means you will need to totally screw the box up??

basically, i say make it, figure out teh volume, and just do it with a peice of PVC pipe, say 4" put it on the same side as the sub...
mad89
hmm. i say slot port on the right side of the box (right side of the pic)...

and ull need to put a 90degree bend in it i imagine...

alternatively, run dual 3.5" round ports (90mm storm water pipe) which u can also use 90 degree bends...

have a look here about the 90degree ports... (slightly off topic/unrelated to your application, but should be moderately helpful still)

thats where i am going. just with the aeroport it has flared ends (aero) to help reduce port noise and increase port flow.
brad89
well say the box is roughly 3cu. ft. i can fit in a 200 x 70 slot port which is 320 long so its not impossible nathan.

got those measurements from bassbox 6 pro btw so they should be right
mad89
if u can make the slot port fit. then do it.

id put it on the right side of the subbox, same side as the sub smile.gif
db nathan
if you think you can comfortably fit the slot, then by all means try it.
If it doesnt work you can always block the slot and try different ports.
You dont always get the perfect box and tuning the first go, especially with custom/iregular boxes. practice and testing makes for perfect.

as mentioned, the port really shoud go on the same face as the sub.
brad89
not long enough, hell, its a kicker theyre not meant to sound awesome, theyre meant to go loud lol. atm i think im just gonna whack it on the top coz thats the only way it'll fit.

thanks for your help guys,
Brad.
db nathan
cool. let us know how it goes.
mad89
make it fit on the front side.. either by using a 90degree bend in the slot port, OR get a couple of round ports (not sure how many u would need...)

they can be bent 90degrees too (as per the other link/thread i showed u)...

It's going to be very difficult to get the required length on the slot port and bends will become tricky in such a tight space, unless you tune to something stupid and high. I would just go a single 100mm aeroport and be done with it.
trism
mm finally another voice of reason....

Trism, im with you too....

aeroport on the front is the way to go.

But if he wants to try something else, he will learn through trial and error.
We all had to star somewhere, trial and error is one such way of learning.
trism
lol, ANOTHER voice of reason

seriusly dude, that box shape looks waaaayyy to weird to even bother slotting it....

remember, if you need to use a longer aeroport, hit up bunnings or a plumming store and grab sone 90* pieces. you can bend it as many times as necessary, as long as its the right overall length and width...
CVBASS
just use bent aero ports, thats what i did... its easy and looks better than a slot IMO
