Full Version: Wireless Routers?

Hi all,

I am currently running a 1.5mb ADSL service at home. I am thinking about adding a wireless router to use on a laptop down stairs in our study.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent wireless router to use?? I have never used the wireless routers, I assume they still will keep the same speed as a standard modem?? Also, how far of a distance do they operate over?? My house is about 45squares.

I know this sounds clueless, but I am not very savy on the whole wireless thing.

Cheers

i use apples airport extreme. basically, its a router, that you plug into the wall socket, load the software onto the computer, and use that to setup the network.

it just plugs in via ethernet cable.

it allows has a usb port, to allow wireless printning, but another cool thing is it has a 3.5mm input jack. you plug your amp/speakers/whatever into it, then you can use itunes to wirelessly play your music.

data rate conection of 54mbps

its mac and pc comaptable.

i have teh modem wired to the PC via usb, then i have teh airport connected via the ethernet cable...

they say the range is about 45m, but i find that anything over about 25-30, the bitrate drops down pretty low, to around 5-6mbps.....

I have good success and good experiences with D-Link and Linksys.

I have a D-Link wirless ADSL router - works fine.

Linksys...

I've lost count of the number of wireless routers/access points ive setup, and linksys are the only ones that seem to work properly (and not constantly drop out) smile.gif

i ended up with a Netgear DG834G. can't fault it.

got it for ~ $110, and had filters included.

i find that having modem and router in 1 is very convenient, although i guess if it dies, i'm stuck with no net!

If you're going to buy a current Linksys, be prepared to load modded/custom firmware onto it.
I've got an early model and it's great, but lately they're been BLLLELAAAARGGGHHHH!!!!!!! etc.

Another vote for the Netgear.

i got a netgear at work and that works well, and a belkin at home.
both do the job and never really get dropouts, the distance on the belkin aint that great, it's at the front of the house, im at the back and get average signal..

current linksys are garbage (i have had several access points/modems fail on me)

i'm using netgear atm and no problems at all

I also have a Netgear DG834G, its on ADSL2+ with TPG and it is OK until the noise margin hits 12 dB and then it has issues trying to sync, but I dont think this would be a problem with ADSL at 1.5 Meg

There is a new version of firmware (DG834V3_V4.01.19) released in Jan that has improved a lot of issues and has added extra security options for the wireless settings. Make sure what ever modem/router you buy, that you use some security on the wireless as the default setting for most of them is off. I can surf happily on my neighbours unsecured connection if I want LOL

The only feature that the DG834G doesnt which may interest you is VOIP for cheaper STD and local calls, especially if you have a partner like mine that their favourite hobby is using the phone !!!

If you have ADSL2+ service with VoIP, be careful not to purchase the Netgear DG834G v1.0. This version cannot be upgraded into firmware version 4 and it will drop out constantly (i have over 500 drop out in just 2 weeks). Other newer version is fine as it can be upgraded into new firmware.

I have telstra smallpuddle cable beamed out wirelessly using a Dlink 628-G+ 802.11 b/g router and 3x PCI wireless network cards. It's fully WEP encrypted, very stable and I'd happily recommend Dlink products. Cheap and reliable, however...!

ALWAYS goto the vendor website and obtain the latest device drivers, do not use the included ones on CD. This advice would go for most new hardware.

can also recommend the dg834g for various reasons that have already been discussed

I ended up with the Belkin wireless modem and 4port router. Thus far i am digging it.
