hey guys, i have a 2004 lancer CH and i was thinking about buying a new exhaust. the exhaust i had in mind was this:

HKS 4" STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST MUFFLER

Exhaust Dimension: Length 17" Tip Diameter 4" Inlet Diameter 2.5" Width 5"

the only problem i have is, i dont know if this will sound good on my car. so i need some advice.

head to ur local carline mufflers, and ask them to put a lukey sports exhaust on for you will cost no more then $220 and will sound alot better then an ebay hks hotdog muffler

and another cannon on a lancer please dont

Get an actual exhaust. 2.5" catback will set you back around $2-300 or a full exhaust for around $300 i think.

Cannon=Ghey ricer. As said above, a cat back exaust would be a lot better.

unfortunately for you it is almost impossible to find a nice sounding 4 cylinder.
even worse is that no cannon ever sounds good unless it is on a worked v8 with no drone.

there is NOTHING that can make you entire week worse than some idiot with a car that goes:

haha true. but yeah i was kinda after the ricer sound. like a silvia. that kind of sound. so hard to choose wat to do. like i want a ricer sound but i dont want it to sound like its "farting" or is that the same thing .

i have a 3inch cannon hks but it is a small one.. looks a lot better than them massive things.. on a 4cyl always put on a small cannon never a massive one as it will look out of place, and my car sounds rice!! nothing wrong with ricers!!!!!!!

ps. you bought a lancer for a reason.. you cant do anythign else than rice them up

haha putting a muffler on any 4cyl will sound riced out.. it will be very loud and droan like a b*tch lol, when i have a headache i hate my muffler but yer if you want the riced sound, get one =]

If you want a cannon, get a cannon..

When your over how loud it is, dont change your exhaust.. Turbo it!

see the top hks one, they are tiny, not reccomended for anything bigger then a suzuki cappuchino or sumthing with similar engine size, as i bought that exact same one with intentions of putting it on my pocket bike

the smaller, the louder.. i think on lancers or small ricers like mine a small one looks better, leave the bigger ones for the rexy's and supras

coz it is lol. i bought the same one ages ago, and all it is, is a pos no name generic brand cannon, and they get an a bit of metal with hks stamped on it, and do a couple of spot welds to hold it on..

it should be illegal to have a 'performance' exhaust on any 4 cylinder made after 1970.

yeah nothing like a fake HKS cannon.

on my ex's Cordoba we have 2 1/4in car back with a 12in hotdog and cannon (3A pos but still better than a fake hks) now it started of pretty loud, after 2 years and all the packing inside the cannon had pretty much burnt away it was way to f***ing loud.
it was a 4cyl but being a euro had a nice deap note, a little drony but thats cause the zorst shop were dickheads, and had some nice little pop's etc when trailing the throttle.

anyway im over them now, nothing worse that a lancer with a cannon.. i just want to put stuff up them and block them and make there motor die...

Canons on Lancers/Civics/Hyundais etc are just dumb. If you think sounding like an oversized farting mosquito is cool, get one. They are as offensive as massive kits with stock wheels, or windscreen washer lights. I often wonder if people with those kind of cars put them in their toybox at night with their other hotwheels cars....

I have a cannon on my car, and yes I have a lancer. Wow big shock!
Personally I like the sound of my 3A racing Exhaust. Being an auto it's not overly noisy.
How I see it is, it's my car, I like the look of it so other people’s opinions don't bother me.

So if you want that exhaust, get it.

thats true man and i rekon ur car is sweet, saw the set up on the other topic. but yeah i think i might get a cannon exhaust now and mine too is auto so yeah.plus it comes with a silencer

Personally, I wouldn't bother with anything more than a 2.25, 2.5, 3-inch at the most, on a normally aspirated small 4-cylinder.

Get a nice cat back system from your local exhaust specialist - if your budget allows - go the whole hog including high-flow cat converter and maybe even extractors/headers.

In concert with a high-flow air filter (ram pod type), your car should run marginally better with better throttle response, perhaps even slightly better fuel economy, and sound alot meatier on wide-open throttle, while still being relatively quiet at idle, if a little deeper.

don't worry about gettin a high flow cat they make bugger all diference

I own a CE Lancer 4 door and im going to put an exhaust on my car because i want the sound and the look that my car deserves!

I personally think a Hotdog on a "commonwhore" or a falcon, looks really tacky! if you are going to do an exhaust upgrade atleast ad a bit of class to it and have dual or quad 2", 2.25", or 2.5" tips.

Hotdogs on crappy "commonwhores" or falcons look like sh*t!

i don't have a cannon on my car.
it's a 91 mazda wagon.
it's got a 2.5" straight through tho
and it sounds heaps better than a cannon

anyway if you want it for sound seriously just get a cannon, from the sounds of it u will be happy!

if you get the cannon and dont want the fart sound, i recommend fitting as many big long silencers as you can possibly fit... with 2.25 or 2.5 zorst all the way, just get it done with no silencers first, if it farts its not hard to get it back up on the hoist and cut out a section and weld in a silencer at a time.

Will it "sound good" ? Well thats really up to you.. if you want a boomy droning bassy exhaust note then yes its probably ideal for what you want.

Will it help performance ? No. NA engines like back pressure to aid in scavenging. Canon's were originally designed for turbo's, which dont like back pressure at all. So typically, adding a canon to an NA engine results in a nice loss of back pressure and low end torque.

Will the engine breath better ? I doubt it. If I'm coming whipping along side a Lancer with a canon I can hear the driver snagging 2 gears for every 1 gear I grab.. hence its my reasoning that the canon doesnt do anything to help with the engines breathing.

Just FYI, I've got 4 to 1 tuned length extractors into a stock cat., 2" pipes thru a 22" resonator and Lukey sports muffler.. she'll happily rev out to a 6000RPM redline too, but it doesnt "sound good". Then again, I wanted performance not to wake the neighbors

FYI - I had 2.5" from the secondaries to the end, hi flo cat and a tiny muffler/would be the equivilent of a polished up hotdog i think on my old rolla twincam. that and pod filter on otherwise stock motor (88kw stock)
pushed 103.1hp @ wheels on a dyno day and to compare a 100kw mazda astina pushed 102hp atw the same day

whatever hp atw wheels is pretty much what you'd be making at the flywheel in kilowatts.

oh and it was LOUD as hell with the performance to match
and it sounded awesome too...nothing like the typical 4 cyl fart/drone cos it revved hard right up to 7600rpm redline
