G'day Guys and Gals,
I currently have a Samsung DH820 slider phone and love it but i wanna upgrade to sumthin that is "Flashier" and with maybe PDA options and a good camera that isnt to bulky (like the majority of the N-series). i want to encompass a pda with a phone that has a half decent camera, plays music and has a battery life better than a day with constant use.......anyone have any ideas or know of any new phones coming out onto the market soon enough that would be good for me? but the only restriction is that i have to stay with optus.....so i cant go telstra or other carriers, because of work...
Cheers,
Jon

New phones suck, every time I get the latest best thing out a week later something better comes out. I don't know why I have to have a good phone, I never use the features anyway.

We have I-Mate products at work and they are pretty good if you want a PDA\Phone.
If you want a phone with a few extras, get an SP5, has camera, can sync with mail etc, but small as a normal phone.
K-JAM and JASJAM's are more PDA's with phone abilities, they are a bit chunkier as they both have slide out keyboards.
I have a JASJAM and use it to sync with Outlook. Also has a DivX\Xvid player and you can put GPS software on them. They are quite versatile. However the $1200 RRP price tag might turn you off.
The SP5 is down to about $370 from memory.

Are all these I-Mate phones/PDA's able to be used on the optus network or is it only telstra?
TEGBOY
Feb 23 2007, 12:35 PM
I know the Imate does. The Jasjam, is telstra only because its 3G.

I'll be getting one of these when I head over to Singapore in 6 weeks:

QUOTE
Let's start with what E-Ten's latest
Glofiish -- the X800 -- doesn't have: a QWERTY keyboard. Otherwise, it's packed to the, uh, gills. We're talking
Windows Mobile 6, large VGA display, HSDPA/WCDMA
like we heard,
GPS, WiFi, quad-band GSM (like the
X500, we presume), Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel camera on the back with a second up front for video calls. Hell, it even sports a Skype client which may or may not be in the final product as they "work out the final details." All this without any noticeable increase in size from the already svelt X500. Expected to hit globally before summer is done with an MSRP somewhere between $850 and $900.

paying more money to get cameras and all that crap in phones is a huge waste of money

yeh I keep phone and music separate. It has better effects on the wallet

but I think I might be tempted on the iphone depending how it goes when I get to see it for myself.

i know this is an old topic, but ill drag it up rather than starting a new one..
basically, i want a phone that allows me to do everything on the touch screen, with the use of a stylus.. so calling, smsing, etc..
it needs to have good sms function, as thats what i use most of the time.
or is there no phones that have decent capabilities in this area??
cheers

from everything i have read about the iPhone (many many many RSS feeds a day) i wouldnt touch one.
hopefully by the time it comes to Aust it will be a 3G phone and have a removable battery etc and all the other bugs ironed out.
maybe a built in screen washer to clean it every 5 min :S

I love the look of that x800, i wonder if it will be available on NextG (850Mhz)?
Though i dunno if i could go back to a PDA without a keyboard. I love my JasJam

SMS and even just general text entry has never been easier on a phone

I currently own a N95 and it is a horrible POS. The phone itself isn't too bad, but the faults, bugs and problems i've had with it are. Took it back to the Nokia service centre twice, and should be taking it back a third time but I really CBF.

I like the look and features of the new Nokia N82. Anyone else seen it or have any info?
~Sparkles~
Apr 11 2008, 03:30 PM
In all seriousness Rick I'd avoid any of the N series Nokias.
My N80 ended up costing Telstra about $32,000 - well it was partially to do with my N80... (long story)
I'm actually back using a 8230i
I really want a blue tick approved phone similar to the 8230i something solid with no moving parts and no bullcrap features that can be physically connected to a high gain external antenna.
BUT my experiance with N80 is... The way it randomly freezes occasionally goes ape sh!t and sounds like your talking to someone in space via VoIP, the way that after getting nokia to do the firmware update it runs slower than a commodore 64. the fact that it randomly looses people out of my phone book and the fact that the screen freezes and goes blank. the menu is hard to navigate and dont bother trying to use its PDA features - they are a waste of time - yeah its a bloodly brilliant phone .
mad89
Apr 11 2008, 03:41 PM
Yeah fair enough. In saying that though, the N80 and N82 are
verrrrrrrrrryy different phones.
My brother in law has had pretty much that same list of problems with his N80, as well as the screen randomly blanking out mid slide etc (my guess is its to do with the ribbon cable in the slide mechanism). He had it sent to Nokia the first time to get it flashed/firmware upgraded, and it was OK for a few months. Had to go back again, and this time it got returned with a silver backing plate to the screen mech, instead of black. WTF. Basically they put someone elses SILVER parts, on his BLACK phone.
Remember that the N80, N70 and (i think) N73 were the 'first generation' N series Nokias, so id expect there to be problems i guess. The new range, N81, N82, N95 8GB, have been pretty good from what ive read. Pot luck i guess.
This is it but, i dont like any of the slide designs, ive seen (and heard about) too many of them failing. Standard 'candybar' style phone. IMO black is back, and looks secks.

still an N series phone Rick and from what Lee told me (lee is our telstra dealer - has been since dad had his first car phone about 19 years ago
) the N series is not a reliable series of phones from nokia

I have the 6110 Navigator, DAM is it unreliable when watching video clips like I always do. but I think that's cos of the 2GB memory card I put in, even though it's a Kingston MC

Never did it before I upgraded the MC.

I was also looking at getting the Nokia N82, bluddy sexc phone. Unfortunately couldn't get it as it wasn't out I think. Plus I wasn't looking to spend more than $50 a month over 2 years.

The best phone is any phone you can do this with:

I've found my 6110n to be excellent. I use it at work (electrician) so it's received its fair share of drops and knocks. I haven't had a problem yet.

I have the Imate "Ultimate 8502" and after 2 weeks using it i have come to the conclusion that, like all other smartphones made by Imate... its a huge let down.
concept, design, hardware is quite good... on paper the specs are also good but has absolutely craphouse, unreliable operating system that constantly crashes and/or freezes for up to 5 mins at a time (i just hit the reset button)

Well broadz hearing that makes me glad i went for the N95 over the iMate (i was gonig to get the 9502 or whatever it is)...
I'm happy with my N95 (on NextG)... only "issue" i have with it is its a bit slow sometimes to open messages (and thats not becuase of a large number of messages as i don't have a large number... yet...)
I have an 8Gb Mirco SD HC card in my phone, so no point getting the 8Gb version...
