Full Version: speaker matching advice

Hi Guys,

just need some advice, i have a new car, and i am going to have a stab at car audio again (been out for probably 3 years now).

The car i will be installing into (audi B5 A4) has space for 5.25" splits in the front door (no bigger), probably 5.25" in rear doors (probably no use as the car is quite small) and 6.5" in rear deck.

I have a set of focal utopia 165W's, a set of boston pro 6.5" (which i probably won't use for this) and a set of 3" Dynaudio midranges from a previous install.

i was thinking about trying to get hold of a set of focal Utopia 136W's for the front to match my 165's which i could use in the rear.. but i seem to have well missed the boat, and there is no way i will pay $2k+ for a set of 5" Utopia Be's smile.gif

does anybody know of another 5.25" speaker that would blend fairly well with my utopias?? i could use the 3" midranges in the front door, with the utopia tweeters, then the 6.5" woofers in the rear, would that be pretty balanced?

the other option i was thinking about was to have 5.25" + tweeters in the doors, 3" mids in kick panels (if they fit!).. but i still need to find a 5.25" to suit...

anybody got any thoughts? or better yet, anybody know where i can track down a genuine set of 136W's??

I think the K2P 5" would be ok, still a nice speaker.

I wouldn't use the Dyn Midrange if you can avoid it - not a nice speaker to work with in terms of tuning/placement. better to get a cone midrange, like a focal 3" or something.

hmmmm, dont the utopia's have a laid back sound, very different to the generalised 'bright' sound of most other focal speakers?

perhaps dyn 220 or morel elate/supremo5?

I have a b5.5 passat and we just fit 6.5 in HSK 165s into the fronts.

pull the door apart and double check? 6.5s are so much more versatile.

there certianly is enough room for the back of 6.5's, but the speaker grill is very small, 1/2 of a 6.5" speaker would be covered by plastic etc (wouldn't the passat be similar?)... can't imagine that would work out too well.

will look into the morel's never really considered them before

hmmm, perhaps the a4s had a different door panel inside.

We had the right hole size for the 6.5 but the back was a bit shallow (needed to clear the window mechanism) so we had to make a custom spacer (1" mdf with a few layers of carpet) for it.

it must be, there is no internal skin to the door really, the speaker screws to the door card, and the door card sits on the frame of the door (very handy for sound deadening the outer skin!).

don't suppose anybody knows a relatively cheap dealer to buy a set of supremo 5's from?
Pulse-R
send a PM to RMA - he will tell you who his distributors are in your area.

Im sure you could be able to get them from RM Audio direct?
Music Pirate
RMA is only supplier isn't he?
Pulse-R
Phil (RMA) is the distributor, there are many dealers around the place.
Performance Car Audio in Bayswater (VIC) is one that I know of, and FHRX in NSW...
