Full Version: deadening - outer or inner ?

apart from sealing the service holes to create a more sealed enclosure, i want to add only 2sqft of deadening per door. can someone give me an idea where 2sqft would be more effective. deadening the outer skin limits panel vibration and backwaves to improve midbass, what about deadening the inner skin, where the speaker is mounted ..

is one more effective than the other ? dynamat speaker kit shows a picture of deadening the inner skin, yet some guides say stick it right behind the speaker if you only have a small amount.

I'd put the majority of it around where the speaker mounts, and a small amount directly behind the speaker on the outer skin.

From my experience (which I admit, is minimal) you will get the most advantage from sealing the service holes, and making sure the speaker mount is as solid as possible.

I would put it around the speaker and on the outer skin.
Not directly behind the woofer, but to one side.
Use a sound absorber (Jaycar Acoutsic Foam, Focal Plain Chant, etc..) directly behind the woofer, but SD there will have little benefit. (Physics made me do it).

You can space it out if you want to limit how much u use, even lay it down in a checkered style. By cutting it into little squares (if you can be bothered)

It should be used first and foremost on large areas of flat sheet metal. If in doubt do the knock test. If you knock it and it sounds like a tin can put a bit of deadener on it. Curves, welds, etc will not be anywhere near as bad as flat sheet metal.

I would put it around the speaker on the inside skin though if given an option. This is where the speaker is actually mounted to. And definetly directly behind the speaker as this is where the SPL is most concentrated, so will be most prone to rattles.

I did this to my doors. Infact I put the foam on the entire bottom half of the outer skin,
The result was that it sounded muffled.
Not sure If I should correct this with tuning or pull the foam out.
What do other people think.

some times when your speaker is to close to the foam its causes problems ..........cors
