I just basically what to know what are the benefits of using a ribbon mid range over say a 5 inch mid range driver. How is off axis response, espescially if it were mounted in the kicks?

Say with a set like the Hertz, it already has a 6 inch mid, however this is not a dedicated mid bass. How do conventional 6.5's such as the hertz function as a dedicated mid bass? Are there usually any compramises with using a high quality 6?

Say with the Supremo set 6, adding a 5 inch or ribbon, how would you expect the 6 to perform with either the Hertz ribbon or a 5 inch supremo?

you could fasten these to your doors tongue.gif ........cors

Somehow the apogees might be a little hard to fit into the car...biggrin.gif

So are they basically electrostats? Do they have the same limitations?

My thoughts are: to get a ribbon mid small enough to fit in a car properly, they wouldn't play low enough to be any more useful than a good tweeter.

Ive always wondered why a midrange ribbon myself. Tweeters is understandable. Hertz ribbon for the mille set plays 700Hz to 35kHz. You cant convince me thats a midrange...

It is understandable for tweeters though. Ribbons have such a unique sound to them...

There are a number of mids available for both Morel and Hertz

In the Morel range the factory recommended mid for Supremo 5 or Supremo 6 is the CDM-88 there is no factory three way crossover at this stage for SUPREMO they are recommended to be run active.

In the Hertz ranges MILLE - the ML-500-R ribbon mid. Hi Energy the MD500 and HL70
Hertz have a range of three way crossovers available. $146 for the Hi Energy up to $1249 for the Mille.

So phil the CDM-88 is what you recommend as a mid range for the supremo? I'm aware that the supremo set 6 is run active, I actually have a set wink.gif Atm I'm just toying with the idea of 3-way active and wondering what combinations would work, not that I have the cash at the moment to go that way... rolleyes.gif Just considering options for the future.

In regards to the hertz, I was wondering what benefit the ribbon adds to the hertz set if it is supposed to be a mid range yet as the Matt says it freq resp was 700hz upward. Seems it will be performing a lot of the mid range and it will be crossing with the tweets.

Additionally, although not worded that well initially, I was wondering if there are usually compramises when using say a usual 6 as a dedicated mid bass instead of reaching up into the higher frequencies.

Just trying to expend my knowledge wink.gif

The Morel factory I have spoke with at length on this matter, they recommend the CDM-88 as a mid, they claim it has more authority than the CDM 54.
When I get the time to do it, my car will be running Supremo 6 with the addition of the CDM 88.

Whilst I hear thematt's concerns regarding the extended range of the mid it must be remembered that the mid was designed to run with the MLK 3 system and that it has a specific crossover to run with and that is exactly what they were looking for when building that system.

was flicking thru an indonesian car audio mag yesterday at audioart and there was a home loudspeaker ribbon...looked like your average smallish active subbox for home theatre but with a big ribbon down the front. it also was CES 07 winner...

i want electrostaics or what ever they are called. shame they are so delicate and cant be put in a car.

the CDM88 does look (from specs) to be much nicer than the 54.. I never really like the CDM54's lower-mid sound.

Might be worth a look at some point.

Quad Electrostats are much more affordable, but they can't be played too loudly. Would be very good coupled with a sub for moderate listening levels and I think do tend to break up easily.

Ive seen the response of the CDM88, and it does look very nice indeed. Certainly better then the Dyn Ive got now...

What I dont understand Phil, is if that midrange goes from 700 to 35kHz, why would you need a tweeter at all?? Yet the MLK3 has the tweeter too, which in itself can drop to 900-odd Hertz. Thats just overlapping. Surely if you were going to create a driver and mate it to the crossover, you'd be specific in its frequency response and deny it the ability for too much overlap??

If I was building an "entire" interior from bare metal, then would use something nicer, but really you need to get the acoustics right to take advantage of anything "Audiophile".
