Yeah still playing with the pillars. I think I will finally settle on that location however there is the issue of the stage being a little narrow (hard to get beyond the mirrors)...
Why not give a set of ambients a try? They won't need to be at high volumes - barely audiable in fact. My bro accidentally left his jaycar 4'" coaxials running in his car off the head unit before. They were in the factory location of his 90 Statesman (up on the dash) and at first we didn't even hear they were running - it was too quiet compared to the rest of the car to be audiable.
One day he had his grills off and I could actually see the 4" domes moving and brought it up. He then disabled them, and the sound stage instantly... subtle but defiantely percievable. I got about an extra 10cm or so of stage height, and brought it up from just above dash level up to around ear / eye level.
That was far from the optimal application of ambients, as they were still running full range and playing midbass frequencies as well, but the improvement was definately there. If they are implemented the right way, I doubt they'd bring any negative effect on your main sound stage at all.

i'm sure I will be able to find them in time to compete for NSW in the national finals!
I bloody well hope so! NSW is in need of a Halo car or two to lead it through the finals and stick it up those other-state-mans.

there is a very low rumble around 20-30hz it was evident that it was being dragged back towards the boot.
As Marty said, that's a touch off... are you defiantely sure the wave was that low? As a general rule, 20hz and even 25hz are generally 'perceived' moreso then actually 'heard' in a car. Even 30hz is towards the weaker side of human hearing, and usually well beyond the point of being audiably directional. In fact, you'd be surprised how few subs actually play down to 20hz (at -3dB or higher) in-car.
Are you sure the wave wasn't more around 60hz-80hz? Many people percieve these frequencies as being lower then they are (as I used to myself) and they are more likely to bring back a stage then the more sub-sonic frequencies of the 20hz region.
I actually would have imagined bass imaging to not be a major issue in the ute, given that the sub is inside the cabin and much further forward then in most cars.
