pardon?

I think what you mean is that they are less efficient due to dispersion from the edge of the diaphragm.

It's still the same piston area, just the flat part "leaks" more at the edges in an acoustic sense. This would make baffle step distortion higher, and higher frequencies sound a little 'thinner'. Overall sensitivity would be lower, allowing an extended low frequency roll-off... but you'd have to be a bit more careful of the enclosure design.

I didnt hear you complaining when listening to my PHD's.... tongue.gif cause they are based on the exact same design for the cone (flat piston). Only the motor is different.

And they have lower sensitivity then their comparable cone counterpart, but most pistons tend to have very high sensitivity when compared to other motor structures. For example, the PHD is a 96dB 1/1. I think the Aliante is around 88dB from memory.

In terms of pure sound, they do sound slightly different. Its a sound that personally, I absolutely adore. Added to that they are VERY accurate for a non-servo motor, its a bit of spice for every taste.

Here is the website too
http://www.phase-linear.de/produkte.asp?p=...=44&lang=EN

My Apologies, I was of the understanding that flat cone speakers are less efficient than an equivalent parabolic cone speaker with the same motor structure. And surely the radiating area of a flat cone is smaller for a given diameter?

I was not aware that the PHD subs were a piston design, they just sounded fast. Is it the cone design or number of coils that make them so efficient?
Shreknos
maybe in regards to sq, but are the sub 500 dollar subs as loud???
Shreknos
the SI mag looks alright...

anyone heard one??

A bit of both. The motor structure (inclusive of coils) does make them incredibly quick, but the piston design is renowned for their ability to play 'subtle' notes more accurately. Unfortunately though, piston designs are not as strong as their cone counterparts, as their stiffness needs to be fully internal (hence why both the PHD and the Aliante are about 15-20mm thick). Cone subs can rely on their geometry to provide a lot of the stiffness required.

Im really interested in hearing a Critical Mass myself, find out if the guys over at CAE are as full of $hit as they sound. Has anyone else noticed that of every sub they've tested, everyone of them has been incredibly good??
Pulse-R
cone area is "the equivalent flat area of the disc" - and is measured across the front, usually from the mid-point (peak) of the roll-surround.

I don't even think there's a SI Mag in the country, let alone heard one biggrin.gif. There are tons of small company with great product, the review on SI Mag is certainly a good one.
Shreknos
i know this is a hard question to answer,

but, in regards to the aliante, and the BE 21wx,

when you guys say low output,

how low do you mean???

like almost inaudible or what???
Luke352
Talking to Andrew at Northfield today there is actually a 13" Be sub coming in a few months apparently. That may be a bit more suitable.
Shreknos
probably wont be applicable in a few months though...

just after tax, i should have all my new stuff bought an installed...

sad.gif

i might have to wait

depends on the coil config...

any news on the coils of the Be 13???
fury
Charlie, coming from a huge F* off 15" sub with 3kw on tap to something a bit more "tame", you're definately going to miss the output. Simon's metered his Focal to ~137db.
If you ask me this is more than enough... but for you, who knows?
Shreknos
no no no, don tget me wrong, as long i can sort of feel it, and it blends nice with my midbass, and the midbass rocks, i will be happy,

i just dont want some completely gutless girly sub that has finesse, i still want to be able to feel it...

know what i mean...

eg, as long its as loud as my sub on -6db like you heard it, before we turned it down...
_Anthony_
Seriously, find a Phoenix Gold Ti 12D Elite, it will provide that, but sound sensational as well.

I installed one of these(stero integrity Magnum D2 12") about 2 and a bit years ago into a sealed fibreglass box about 1.2 cu ft and I still reckon it is the best sounding woofer I have heard in a car PERIOD...very clean, ,mucho output, blended well with the 7" dyn midbass, very well buit etc...bloody nice woofers will be a private import though

Shreknos
actually, its on the cards to be honest
trism
SHOCK!!!HORROR!!! lol

the vandium 12 is a v. nice sounding woofer....

although personally i liked the focal 33kx, or the hertz mille more...
philz
Does anyone know the price of the Hertz Mille, cause i'm not sure if the price on fhrx is the older mille or the new one... and I'm after the newer one..
Hens
so what did you end up going with shrek? I was looking at getting the 12inch phd myself, but was recommended against it for my personal tastes in music (my everyday listening does not comprise of mostly "reference:" material.) I am looking for a shallow mount myself (my boot is pathetically small) and have gone with an illusion sub... perhaps not as tight the phd but has better power handling.
Shreknos
im looking at buying next week or so,

the importers for polk audio changed hands, so its a wait on the SR sub, once they get one in, they are gonna let me try it in my car...

so, either that, or a kx, or an ME,
HBD
I use a Rainbow Vanadium 12" and it sounds the goods regardless of whether I'm listening to classical or thrash metal. It'll boom, sweep or punch; basically although I'm not saying it's the ONLY good sub out there, it IS a very very good one that after spending lots of time listening to, I'd recommend to mates.
Shreknos
id love to take your word for it blake,

but im afraid that if i do, i may end up upset,

cos we MAY have different ideas on SQ and what sounds good...

i may like a different sound than you...

and i dont think anyone in VIC runs one...

yea.. i still do.. i left it in aussie and now working in asia.. i just decided a couple of months ago to ship it back.. now i just started playing with it again.. planning to do some upgrades lol...

I know it's probably not your cup of tea (assuming you're still looking) but for a purist SQ sub I'd go a Peerless XXLS.

Failing that, my next choices would have to be Morel Ultimo and Rainbow Vanadium.
TEGBOY
Has anyone heard a X2 Xtant!?!? I heard one today, in a Subaru Liberty, it was a single 10 and was awesome. It was an a bandpass enclosure, and it rocked. It was super accurate and very clean, right down to rib tickling territory. Whilst not a purist subwoofer, it came darn close.
Woody
Wow... that was a good read for a gravedig....
