Ok, i've recently purchased my GPS reciever ready for the car. at the moment i just have it stationary up here with me inside but i'd like to try out some mapping software first here before it goes into the car (even though it's not going to move anywhere up here). Now i'm confused. As i see it,the general idea is that you download a) gps navigation software such as FreeDrive, MapMonkey etc and b) you then download maps. How do you go about integrating these maps? Or perhaps, more importantly, what's the best place to get these maps to begin with and are there any free ones available?

I've downloaded freeDrive and opened it up, but looking at it i can't see how you'd go about adding a map to it or what and at the moment it's jus displaying a map of somewhere in the UK (which i'm assuming is just the default thing it does). Can someone please help, i've got no idea how to get started on this. Thanks in advance, Bryce.

i know someone knows the answer to this, they'd have to or nobody else on these forums would be using gps software on their carputer smile.gif.

Maps arent available for free. But you might be able to find them via a torrent tracker...who knows unknw.gif happy.gif .

If you were able to find Australia Q3 2005 maps, then theorhetically you could put them into the maps directory under "Australia". Similar to how the UK directory exists for the UK maps. You might also need to put the cracked DLL (which may or may not exist) included with the map torrent, into the main destinator directory - overwriting the old one (which also may or may not exist).

If you have managed to complete these hypothetical tasks, and still wish to amuse yourself, then, in theory, you would click settings in Freedrive and go to page 2 or 3, and then select the Aus map in the change map/map setup option.

That is how I would imagine you could do something like this.. but then again.. I dont know if any of what I said is even true. smile.gif

Hi there Iceman, a few questions to get started... I've had a look at the destinator site previously and it was a little confusing as to what was what. You say the "Q3 2005" maps for Australia. I see there is like "Q2" etc... what does the "Q2" or "Q3" mean or denote? Second question, what sort of file extensions do the map files have? (So i know what to look for and what to replace).

You mention a main "Destinator" directory. Is Destinator an application in itself is it? Or is it just map files to use in other GPS navigation/mapping applications? Thanks in advance, Bryce.

Q stands for Quarter. So Q32005 = 3rd Quarter of 2005. This denotes when the map was current/released.

There are multiple files for each map. Extensions are .MAP, .TAB, .DAT and some others. The map file would decompress all the necessary files into a directory of the country name.

Destinator is an application. It will most likely install itself to C:\DestinatorApps\Destinator.
Within that there would be a directory 'Destinator'. Within 'Destinator' would be the folders containing your map files (maps).
IE: C:\DestinatorApps\Destinator\Australia
..........................................................^ Folder containing all the files for the Australia map.

I have used Map Monkey, and that is how it worked.. it might be a little different for other nav apps (freedrive).

Hi Brycestro,

you can go to the Centrafuse Homepage and download the Trial. In that Trial is a Destinator.exe. You can use it
standalone whitout any limits. It is Destinator 6.The only thing you need are Destinator Australia maps.

theres i think it was q2 2006 australia maps available which are perfect - except for the poi eing a little sparse,

and tehres better ones that come with a purchase from centrafuse website...

for australia i gues we are stuck with destinator, lucky now we can run destinator 6 which is much bette improvement over the 2005 maps on d5 (keep saying destination not drivable on thosE!)

map monkey freedrive should now support d6 maps, but im 100% centrafus (frontend ) does as i use this in my systems.

Theres also copilot in Australia but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

and OziExplorer whatever that was i forgot ,...tooo dodgy to look into...

dirtytwo, how did you get destinator 6 to run without centrfuse (as far as i can tell it requires an exe named centrafuse.exe to be in the same folder?) PM Me... smile.gif
