Full Version: Can you buy a seperate mid driver?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows some brands/models/companies that can offer a 2" - 4" mid driver on its own? I am looking for a replacement to my front stage that hopefully wont cost the earth, but will still sound good. The speakers I have at the moment are Eclipse SC8365 (6.5" three ways with a 2.5" mid), I run those fully active and particularly have the mid running 1kHz to 3.2kHz.

I have had a bit of bad luck with these speakers, and they aren't the greatest sounding in the world, but I am struggling to find something better. I mean, I've seen Dyns, and I like their woofers, but I am not a fan of their tweeters, don't want to buy a three-way set just to poach the woofers and mids.

I have looked at the MB Quart PVF-210 set, but I don't really need a crossover or tweeter... which seems a waste to buy the set and poach.

Is there anything else I can do? I'd love to be able to pick and choose three way bits and have found you can only really get out-of-set tweeters and woofers.

My mids are getting 60wRMS each, and that can go way higher if needed (by re-arranging the amps).

Would appreciate any opinions.

have a look at the vifa, peerless and scan speak lines. Do you have a budget?

Both Dyn and Morel offer midranges and midbasses seperately.
Many other companies do to (ie: focal, rainbow).

The Dynaudio MW140/2 that I have sound nice enough.
Also the Morel CDM88 or CDM54 is good.

They are both dome mids, and can be fussy about location/angle.

best results (apparently) are from using a cone mid, around 3 or 4 inch is ok.
have a look at the Morel (raw drivers) web site, also some info in the car audio section.

what about look at some Vifa or Scanspeak or Peerless 2" domes - they cover the frequency you look for, and I'm sure there's even one which would work with your existing crossover.

morel cdm88s are the best bang for buck, and are a breaze to install too...

dls also sell many mids seperatley,

How about the Hybrid Audio Legatia? They are set to release the 4" soon, which Im sure will rock the market. The 3" Legatia is supposedly incredible in its performance.

Cheap too.

I'd suggest giving Rainbow and Focal a shot - both tend to have some pretty nice mids.

The Rainbow SLC mids are a 4" cone design and should provide some good bang for buck, although I'm not sure of their exact pricing - you'd need to check with one of the retailers or contact mobile fidelity (distributer).

Focal K2P mids look quite nice on paper, but I've not heard them in the flesh. Also not sure on where abouts they are positioned price wise.

Scanspeak definately make some nice drivers, and to my understanding Seas do also - but consider the impedance as well. I most of these drivers are designed for home audio use, and are 6 or 8 ohm. This will make them more power hungry and harder to drive (amps will generally make less power at a higher impedance).

I'm not sure if you can get the focal drivers separately... can anyone clarify this?

Gordo!

If you're considering impedance, then you also have to factor in efficiency. Home audio drivers tend to be more efficient than car woofers (as a general rule with exceptions of course). The ~3dB you lose in halving the power you make up for in efficiency. Added bonus is the amps power supply is less stressed so happy altenator/battery too.

not sure about the focal's either.. i know you can buy a midbass expansion kit..

Cheers all, I will be hitting up a bunch of websites and retailers to try and demo/spec this gear out.

And yeah, I saw a post somewhere else around here where peerless and vifa were being used, but I was worried about the 8ohm 4" with chamber being a bit hard to manage up front.

Budget wise, not really. I was quite happy when I found the MBQs for around $400.00. Ideally, and over time of course (as I am not wealthy), I'd like to spend the equiv of a $1600.00 (or so) set of splits in total... but by buying the best seperate drivers in the 6"-7" woofer (80Hz to ~1kHz inc roll slope), 2"-4" mid (~1kHz - ~3.5kHz) and 0.5"-0.75" tweeter (upwards of ~3.2kHz with a nice roll-off on the top end.). I just haven't been 100% happy with any pre-packaged set of three-ways... not even the Dyns.

I appear to have an off-balance left mid at the moment which causes buzzing at about 1.8kHz, so I am looking for a replacement to the mids first. Unfortunately it can't be fixed because of the speaker design (sealed/glued) and Eclipse can't supply me seperate mid.

Appreciate the comments.... keep 'em coming.

MB Quart have a NEW dedicated 6.5" midbass kit, the RVF164.
