hi folks

im getting into PCs full stop atm....putting together my own desktop (check out tech heads corner) but thats another story........

pretty much...i hate to admit it, but i KNOW im going to put a carputer into my next car......but dont want to bother with it in my celica, which i plan to keep over the next year or two atleast (poor uni kid)....

sorta hoping there might be a short-cut possible

is there anyway to connect a hard drive to a deck (pioneer 8650) directly? .......to play the music which is on it

going to need to be in some kind of caddy, and power is going to be an issue.......but yeh, are there any options at all?

the current case i have for my external drive (if i was to put one in the car, i might think about a 2.5inch 160gig or something) connects to the pc via usb (will use its SATA connection in new pc)....and i know there are some decks which just have a usb input on the front.........but yeh, just a thought

anyway, cheers folks.....i'd love to be able to put all my music on a drive in the car lol.......yes, navigating through it is going to be a bitch.....

side note....something i might look at would be the

Maxtor OneTouch III (external drive+case)

can pick up a 200gig unit for $195 from MSY

Alpine have a USB adapter. Maybe check out if Pioneer has one (or has one coming) too?

Blaupunkt Memphis MP66 HU is the only one i know of so far that will accept actual portable HDD, most of the rest only support thumbdrives.
would love to find out which units will be able to use a HDD as having your whole collection at hand would be quite handy

You could get an Mvix and hook it up through rca plugs. It's a media player that has a remote and it plays MP3s and vids.

use a notebook hd (2.5") and appropriate case...it powers off the usb so all good...

or if you find the media player ones it has separate power source which is only 5V so u can get a suitable plug into ciggy lighter socket converter. but thats only to use with non usb interface... then just have screen to navigate the menu and audio thru your system...

Alpine now have a USB thing too

http://www.alpine.com.au/products/product.asp?modelID=340

You could probably plug a USB hard drive in. Get a laptop drive and mini hard-drive case

just as a comparison. You can get 500gb Western Digital hdd for $265 from Officeworks canberra. I think you're paying a little too high for that hdd. Western Digital is equally reputable and reliable as maxtor.
Also make sure it is protected well in the car. You'll reduce the lifespan of any hdd because it really isn't designed for that much movement so in a nice place like the glovebox could be ideal.

yeh dw, im picking up my 320gig hdd for my pc for $101 currently......(umart/msy ftw dude).....(well, i'll be getting it once i finish saving for the whole pc, check my other thread)

goodluck for the boys with the alpine gear

for now im going to resort of mp3 discs........im not willing to fork out a hundred bucks for a connecter, plus the price of a drive, plus the price of a suitable caddy for it, plus the price of an inverter/power-adaptor if necessary too at this stage lol.....

carputer with 700gig drive in the future smile.gif

mmm, fairly sure its more for the newer models, as the older one's don't have the software to access hard drive's over their ai-net/usb connection.

hence why the ipod adapter(KCA-420i?) had it's own brain box, to do all the decoding and computer work to make it work with all HU's, whereas new ones(KCExxxi) have built in software for th eipod, also for USB products.

yer i had a feeling it would be the case but it was worth a try...
i can just sell the unit or upgrade...again biggrin.gif

lol I looked them up, they're not literally $5 but they're not expensive. I've got a usb case for a 2.5" laptop harddrive and put a 120gb in it, these cases seem to be much cheaper than the full-size ones.

MSY have :
  • Quality External 2.5” USB 2.0 Notebook HDD Enclosure $8 “Suitable For High Speed Notebook HDD”
  • One Touch External 2.5” USB 2.0 Notebook HDD Enclosure $15 “Suitable For High Speed Notebook HDD Backup”
  • Two Button with O/S Ext. 2.5” USB 2.0 Notebook HDD Enclosure $49 “Suitable For High Speed Notebook HDD”
  • Quality External 3.5” USB 2.0 IDE HDD Enclosure $18 “Suitable For High Speed IDE HDD”
  • Quality External 3.5” USB 2.0+1394 Combo IDE HDD Enclosure $33 “Suitable For High Speed IDE HDD”
  • One Touch External 3.5” USB 2.0 IDE HDD Enclosure $39 “Suitable For High Speed IDE HDD”
  • Quality External 3.5” LAN + USB2.0 “Pure Alum.” HDD Enclosure with SATA Connector
  • $74 “Suitable For High Speed IDE HDD”
  • Two Button with O/S Ext. 3.5” USB 2.0 IDE HDD Enclosure $80 “Suitable For High Speed IDE HDD”
  • Quality External 3.5” USB 2.0 to SATA, IDE HDD Enclosure $33 “Suitable For High Speed SATA HDD”
  • Quality External 3.5” SATA to E-SATA HDD Enclosure with SATA Connector $36 “Suitable For High Speed SATA HDD”

i'm using a kenwood MP5035U, which has a USB connection out the back..
Maxtor external HDD running off a 600watt inverter (had it lieing around) and it works fine... takes a while to read the source, but thats due to the 250ish GB of music on there, aswell as the numbers of folders!

curiously enough i plugged in my girlfriends Ipod into it and i could change songs/albums through the headunit, without the external Ipod control thingy!
