I cant see why laptop/notbook computers are being used in carputer design. What downsides do you encounter when using a notebook in a carputer design? Couldnt you just run all the leads under the seat and run all the equipment from there?

As mentioned I really can't see any down side, everything is already looked after for you.

I will let you know in a few weeks though how I go using a laptop!

Downside:
1/ Onboard sound. Usually this is crap quality. You can get PCMCI/USB devices which are much better however.
2/ Turning the laptop on. Usually requires hacking the power button. There are a few gadgets around these days which can spoof WOL request, etc, to turn the lappy on.
3/ Cost.
