Full Version: Boston Pro60 crossover query

Im installing a set of boston Pro60 splits into a VS ute, powered by a boston GT40 4 channel amp.

space is pretty tight, and im thinking it would be nice not to use the bulky cross overs that came with the splits and run the woofers and tweets fully active on the 4 channel amp.

question is, would I be sacrificing any SQ this way? or gaining some?
Pulse-R
you will gain more by taking the time to install the midbass properly.

it will, however, work fine either way - but how will you do the crossover if not passive?
NinetySix
im certainly taking the time to install them properly, making up MDF spacers to replace the stock plastic pods and deadening the doors with dynamat...

i was thinking of using the amps internal cross overs, highpass the tweets lowpass the mids

edit: actually not sure the internal cross overs will go high enough for that :S
Shieldsy
it's fairly common for your standard 4 channel amps to not cross high enough to be able to high pass the tweets in a active setup.
what deck are you using? you may be able to high pass off that.

the crossovers arent that bulky..

should fit down somewhere...

remember the crossovers dont have to be up near the speakers. it can be back near the amp and simply use 2 runs of speaker cable from there.

if u use the amps LPF u will need it around 2.5-3.5khz u will also need a HPF on the mid at say 63-80hz i doubt the amp has a band pass feature so u will need this HPF to come from ur HU.... and for the tweets a HPF at again around 2.5-3.5khz.....

the pro60 crossovers are quite good units with a bit of adjustability built in.

like under the seats smile.gif plenty of room in the VS down there wink.gif
NinetySix
yeah scratch that idea, thanks any way guys!

the cross overs will have to go under/behind one of the seats, tho there is already going to be an amp under each seat so its tight like i said!

If its a VS (assuming the ute is the same as the sedan), there is LOADS of room and a couple of nice little spots under the dash.

i was just having a quick read about the GT series amps. i believe they do actually have some pretty nice crossovers. so active is a possibility. but if its for installing sake. then just get around it. it will be much easier in teh long run and can always be changed later.

I'd go active personally regardless of whether space is an issue or not.

I suggest from my own experiences that a factory passive setup can not even come close to active, as long as you have the right components and right adjustability.

When my car was running passive, I could never have dreamed of getting it to the level it's at right now - the lmitations of factory passive are just to crippling.

By going active you have massively improved tuning potential, and unless you get the tuning way off the results will likely reflect that.

BUT that's only if you have suitable tunability available - i.e. a nice, well featured head unit with inbuilt active crossovers, time alignment and decent EQ.
NinetySix
well i got it running now, tho the doors still need to be sealed + deadened... door trims still not on either rolleyes.gif so the midbass is almost non existant, but the sound is very very clean....

the amp is VERY nice, but the cross overs only go up to 350hz. im thinking of running the amp bridged any way, they could probably use a little more power... currently its 4x60, but bridged is 2x200. obviously that would remove the possibility of running them fully active... ill experiment tho.

my head unit is actually a crappy pioneer entry level unit from about 5 years ago, but im only really using it for radio and occasionally CD's.... rest of the time im just plugging my MP3 player straight into the amp. maybe one day ill get a better head unit, but cant reallllllly see the point.
