Finally, I have a proper sound stage in my little Civic. I'm not going to put pics into the build-up section because, frankly, my kicks are neither good enough for me nor presentable, and will likely be ditched not too long from now =)

I have, however, learnt some important things:
  1. Measure twice or more and get it right. The angles should be spot on.
  2. Keep sanding.
  3. Do not put kicks over the carpet and secure with velcro and lugs because you're scared to run into brake lines, etc. Just bind them to the body and chop what you must. Otherwise, there is crap-all mounting depth in a Civic's kicks.
  4. Cheap contact cement is just that.
  5. Press-fit covers must be very deep to stay put with only press fitting.
The speakers therein are some full-range Bose drivers. They are tiny (in diameter) and chunky (in magnet). They do quite well with most things except, predictably, very low bass. That can come with sub and/or splits. And I thought I wouldn't miss sub bass wink.gif

The main thing is that I can now hear hi-hats towards my right, snare to their left, ride and crash towards my left and lead vocals in the middle. Except the Beatles, some of whose recordings are just panned like mad =) Distorted, electric guitars are still a bit difficult to place, unless it's something like Guns n' Roses (again, panned like mad), but I think that comes with the territory, right?

Anyway, this is all probably nothing new to you lot, but I'm really happy that I now have that stereo effect happening properly. I will post build-up pics in the appropriate section when I decide which way to go with the system.

TeeHee!!! As a friend once said, It's like having ghosts in your car!! How is your depth? Also, it would be great to find out which songs you have been listening to when auditioning your setup, just to give me some references for my own system.

No, no, nothing to see, really. I'll post when I do it properly.

Anyway, tracks so far include:
Santana - Evil Ways, which I don't like, but has a little roll at the beginning. If that doesn't play convincingly, then something's wrong.
U2 - With or Without You; can't hear that bass guitar =(
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Beyond - Hoy Foot Tin Hong (Follow my Dream?) - it's a HK rock band, if you can believe that, with piano, strings, BVs, bass, drums and acoustic and electric guitars. In other words, everything smile.gif Nice dynamic range in this one.

At first, I thought that it was just kicks' authority that was missing, which is fine, but then bass with any depth is virtually non-existent at my preferred listening volume and even higher. I have a 12-in Soundstream sitting around, so I just have to figure out where to put it. Also, need another amp to run that guy, and I'm a poor student once again sad.gif
