Full Version: Screen for 02 Camry

Ok, I have bought myself a new car, a 2002 Camry Sportivo, Now it has a nice large Double DIN headunit... (actually wider than DIN by about 20mm)

So I would like to put my carputer into the new car, now i would have just used my old motorised fold out touchscreen i had in my corolla but the LCD panel has died in it, and it needs a replacement panel.. Now i thought since i have to buy a new panel i might as well go for a nice in dash screen... So I measured my dash last night and found that the "hole" is 200mm wide by 100mm high...

Now I was looking at a lilliput EBY-701, which has the external dimensions of 169 x 114 x 33mm so its not wide enough and slightly too high, but i am not sure what the actual dimensions of the screen are... If I am to use this screen I will need to mould it into the dash (which means i will have to get a new surround, (all mods i am doing on the car i want to be 100% reversable for keeping resale) and mould it into the dash with bog and fibreglass and all that...)

I was wondering if there is any screen that will better suit the dimensions of my dash?

To clear up, the true dimensions of the EBY-701 touchscreen is 197mm by 117mm by 33mm at deepest. I've seen the dimensions quoted differently over a number of different sites. I own one which i've molded into my VS commodore, there's photos of hte process if you do a search for "Brycestro's VS Commodore" in the rides/install section you'll find my thread. As you've said, the dimensions are a little too big to fit it in EASILY.

In all honesty i think you'll probably be reasonably hard strapped finding a 7" screen that's 17mm shorter, being as the EBY-701 is already a pretty short screen without too much excess framework going on. Is there definitely no more space/anyway you can get more space to fit in an EBY-701 or similar without making it look bodgy?

You could always go with a smaller screen, maybe, although range would be limited and personally i don't think i'd want to go anything smaller than a 7" screen. Let us know what you decide.

edit: if you were prepared to make perhaps a few compromises on what you are able to hook up to your computer, have you considered going with something like the Infill G4? Double DIN all in one carpc, 3 usb ports, so you could use hubs if you needed more, reasonable specs.... look at this thread here - http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/forums...showtopic=85932. There's one of these going on ebay with a starting bid of $2000 (retail $3499) that ends in a day or so. It only has a 40gb hard-disk which might be harsh for you after having a 120gb one, but for ease of installation i think it would be very hard to beat.

Thanks Brycestro, Yeah i have seen your thread but i wasn't sure whether the VS has standard Double DIN hole or not...

Ok, well the width would be ok... its only the height that could be questionable... what is the dimensions on the screen itself (just the display). If the screen is small enough, then i will just have to glass it into the dash... Or build a new frame that fits into the "hole"...

6.5" screens seem next to impossible to find... and the few i have found (on DigitalWW) were worth like about $600-700 or so...

I had looked at the Infill T3 (the model before the G4) when i was first looking into building a carputer as they have an AM/FM radio which i still haven't seen a successful solution for home builders... But nah i don't think i would want to go for it, as i already have spent a fair bit of money on my carputer i just need a new screen again...

Sorry i don't have the dimensions of the display screen itself right now as my car is in having the air-con fixed up. however, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out... 7" is the diagonal, the screen ratio is 16:9, use a bit of pythagoras and you should get an answer tongue.gif. The problem with trying to mold just the screen itself and not its surround is that you still have to have somewhere for the buttons for the screen to go and be sure that the circuit board that the screen uses isn't bigger than the screen itself and how you'd go about molding the screen directly without its frame... that sounds like ALOT of trouble unless you're very talented.

Perhaps the fold out touchscreen is the best option here. I mean where there's a will there's a way, but you'd need alot of will smile.gif

Brycestro, have you got your car back yet? I still wouldn't mind finding out the dimensions of the lcd panel itself before i buy one myself... smile.gif
