Full Version: Z6 & Type-X splits hybrid

I'm thinking of buying the 6.5" Z6 woofers for sale in the forum to use with Type X crossovers & tweeters. Just wondering if you guys think this combo would sound alright ? I'm a fan of the type X bits, but don't have any experience with the Z6 splits - only old-school rally's & my G2 sub - both of which i loved.

I guess what i'm ultimately wondering here is, would they blend well ?

Well, the worst bits of the old Type X were the mids, the cones on them tended to crease after a fair bit of abuse.

I honestly don't know how they might sound with the Z6 woofers, but it wouldn't be that bad at all.

they should be fine,

not running off that xover though

Running active isn't really an option for me.. what's wrong with the type-X crossover anyway ?

u may put em in and it may be super,,

but i only know of one person who has done this and suceeded, miix crossovers i mean,

and even so, i reckon he may still be better active,,,

youd have to be lucky,

crossover desiegn is more than just impedance, its a whole different game, its a art...

get a cheap 2 chan, and go active if you can on your HU

edit// its just that i would hate for you to think that such a great woofer as the z6 is crap due to the crossover... they should sound ace set up well...

Or go the Z6 mid/bass and something like a Morel MT23 tweeter run actively off a 4 channel amp.

A friend of mine once ran something like this active off his Alpine Ai-Net head unit and I was amazed at how good it sounded.

But, yeah, you could just try the Alpine/Boston combo to see what it's like. You wont know until you try.
Not a fan of the Alpine Type X top end though personally - bit soft and lacks transparency and sparkle.

Z6's will sound louder, and take more power, but are a little less efficient. When I was auditioning splits, I remember thinking that the Alpine's were a tad "cold", and I found the Z's gave more authority to the lower octaves (which I like).

P.S. The Z6 mid woofer's have an impedance of 3 ohms, whereas the type X's are 4 ohms, so the crossover may have issues..

What amplifier do you have?

Could make for a nice driver combination, but I'd recommend against using those crossovers.

Mixing crossovers should be avoided unless you know enough about the drivers and crossovers to know how they will react. Varying impedances can cause all kinds of dramas with crossover points and could turn a potentially nice driver combination into something very average.

I guess you can always give it a try though, and then if it doesn't work switch to active once you have the chance.

Your amplifier may offer the combination of hp/lp filters and enable you to run the drivers actively.

note, that the z6 is a 3ohm, not 4ohm, so will change the xover settings, which also what Ben said.

I would go actively as said by most people on here.

I too was going to try and use those z6 woofers on an Morel MT21 tweeter, but couldn't run active off the amp or headunit.

Dont think anyone mentioned it, but maybe just run the tweet off the crossover and the mids active from the amp if possible. May run into blending problems though.
Poisoner
as philz said teh Z6 is 3 ohm. it would make noise but its not ideal. perhaps semi active using the tweets and crossovers and running the mids active. it would work.

Cheers for the input guys. The amp in question is my beloved (and old-school) Alpine F505. Would be perfect as a dedicated amp for an active front stage, but atm i'm running my G2 off two of the channels bridged for a simpler install.

I've ditched the idea of buying those mids for the moment. Will wait a bit longer and hunt down some 6.5" Boston Pro's for the front-end (to run passively), and use my 4" type-x's for rear-fill off the head-unit.

Thanks for the advice smile.gif
