running active - with just the amp as the crossover, is there any reason you'd want to go with a fancy headunit.

if you choose a midbass with a good natural roll off, and decent tweeter, you should be able to adjust the highpass on the tweeter (fixed to 18db or 24db/octave .. depending what amp you go with).

And have a full active set up - without the cost of a fancy headunit.

old mrv-fxxx amps come to mind

your thoughts ? it wouldnt work with a metal cone woofer, but a paper cone - great!

From a pure crossover selection point of view?

My main gripe is the crossover adjustment is crude to say the least. If your using a scope, then they should be fine.

To give you some idea of "crude"
I compared the sub crossover points in my head unit with the ones on the amp using a sound level meter and a graph. To match the head unit's 80/-18dB xover point, the amp was 200/-24dB. (Note the amp didn't have -18dB)

this may be true, the crossover setting may be a bit hit and miss about dialing in a 'number' but its not really about a number .. in this situation, i would say its about high passing a tweeter to where the woofer begins to roll off
